The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology cooperates with three well-established academic institutions to research the basics of optical technologies and their possible applications. These institutions are:
The Chair for Laser Technology LLT, the Chair for the Technology of Optical Systems TOS, and the Chair of Non-linear Dynamics of Laser-Processing NLD.
Collaboration This cooperation between the RWTH Aachen University institutes and Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft supports a vertical structure in research and development, enhancing new perspectives and applications for the benefit of our society. LLT, TOS and NLD cooperate closely and interdisciplinarily with different institutions and faculties of RWTH Aachen University. This concept yields a creative and effective network, underlining the key function of optical technologies.
The head of the Chair for Laser Technology, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Reinhart Poprawe, is also the head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology. The head of the Chair for the Technology of Optical Systems TOS, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Peter Loosen, is deputy director of ILT.
Education The Chair for Laser Technology offers an interdisciplinary education, bringing together students of mechanical engineering, physics and electrical engineering. The main characteristic of the location is the simultaneous work on both the research and development of new radiation sources, and their applications in various industrial and scientific fields. It can be clearly seen that laser technology is a decisive factor for most areas of public relevance, in some having a key function. Wilhelm von Humboldts traditional idea of Unity of Research and Education is expanded, integrating innovation as a third factor of equal rank.
