By producing surface structures in the micrometer and nanometer scale characteristics of surfaces, as the wettability of liquids or the absorption of light, can be influenced. Thereby directly generated structures and self-organized structures are used.

Possible applications include surfaces that repel dirt ("lotus effect"), prevent the formation of ice or show a good optical absorption. Another field of application is friction optimization for tribological highly stressed components.
